SMS Consent & Opt-In Flow
How end users consent to RecoverPing SMS
RecoverPing sends transactional SMS messages on behalf of merchants who use our service to recover failed Stripe payments. This page documents the full opt-in flow, the exact consent disclosure presented to end users, sample messages, and opt-out behavior — for transparency, carrier review, and regulatory compliance.
1. Overview: Who consents, where, and to what
RecoverPing is a B2B SaaS used by merchants who accept payments through Stripe. We operate as a service provider (data processor) to the merchant, who is the data controller and the sender of record.
End users — the merchant's customers — provide their phone number at the merchant's checkout and may separately opt in to receive SMS messages from the merchant about their order and payment status, including notifications when a payment fails and recovery is attempted.
Consent is collected through a separate, optional, unchecked checkbox displayed before the payment button — not through implied consent from entering a phone number or a disclosure adjacent to the phone field. Merchants are contractually required to use the approved checkbox disclosure as a condition of using RecoverPing.
2. Required consent checkbox
All merchants integrating RecoverPing must present a separate, optional, unchecked checkbox before the payment button. The checkbox label must use the following text, verbatim or with only the merchant name substituted:
The checkbox must not be pre-checked. SMS consent must be independent of the phone number field and of any general Terms of Service checkbox. RecoverPing only sends SMS to customers who explicitly check this box.
This requirement is enforced through RecoverPing's Terms of Service (Section 2: SMS Program Terms) and is verified during merchant onboarding. Merchants found in violation have their RecoverPing access suspended.
3. What the end user sees at checkout
At the merchant's checkout page, the end user enters their phone number in a standard contact field. Before completing payment, they see two separate, unchecked checkboxes: one for general Terms of Service acceptance, and one specifically for SMS payment notifications. Only customers who check the SMS checkbox provide opt-in consent.
4. Sample messages
End users who consented at checkout receive between 1 and 3 messages over 72 hours following a failed payment. The sequence ends when the payment is recovered, the customer opts out, or the window expires.
5. Frequency, opt-out, and help

6. Data handling
- Phone numbers are collected by the merchant at checkout and shared with RecoverPing solely for the purpose of sending payment recovery SMS on the merchant's behalf.
- RecoverPing does not share mobile phone numbers or SMS opt-in data with third parties for marketing purposes.
- Phone numbers are not sold, rented, traded, or shared with affiliates for promotional use.
- Carrier sub-processors used to deliver SMS (Twilio) receive the phone number strictly to route the message.
- Opt-out records are retained indefinitely to honor the recipient's preference across all merchants using RecoverPing.
See the full RecoverPing Privacy Policy for details on data retention, processing, and end-user rights.
